Nissan Leaf 2013 new charger price drop

The Nissan company declares that the moment the 2013 Leaf goes on sale, it will have a lower starting price and with it, more cargo space as well as a new onboard charger which reduces the charge time and helps to improve its range.

One of the main changes in the 2013 Leaf is a 6.6 kW onboard charger. According to the Nissan news, the installed charger shortens the 220-volt charging time from around 8 hours to 4 hours, and after moving the charger to the front of the vehicle, Nissan significantly increases the Leaf’s cargo capacity. Nissan claims there is now 24 cubic ft behind the rear seats plus 30 cubic ft with the rear seats in folded position, which is a significant jump from the 2012 Leaf’s 24 cubic ft of the general cargo space.

6.6 kW charger

With the set charger, together with the changes in the aerodynamics and regenerative braking and “better energy capacity,” the updates will improve the Leaf’s range. The EPA has not released test results yet but the EPA admits the 2012 model can travel 73 miles when on a fully-charged battery.
In December 2012, Nissan announced about that it changed their new electric vehicle warranty in order to cover battery capacity loss. Such battery maintenance is provided for 5 years which equals 60,000 miles on batteries showing less than 75 percent of charging capacity. Yet another significant featire is the new base S model, which Nissan assures will be cheaper than the SV one. The S trim won’t have a 7” display, alloy wheels, cruise control, 6 speakers or navigation system. There are also 3 option packages that include tech amenities like a 7-speaker Bose stereo plus an AroundView Monitor.

As for the price

Specialists believe Nissan created the S trim hoping that a price drop will attract those customers who previously ignored the Leaf because of its price. “This November saw CEO Carlos Ghosn admitting that the Leaf would miss the U.S. targets, with just roughly 10,000 units unloaded here last year, a lot fewer than expected. Nissan's competitors are not happy about the situation either, since many of them have wasted considerable funds in the development of their own EV programs.”
Automakers are eager to increase electric vehicle sales, however, a study held in Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs does not predict much hope for Nissan or its competition. Researchers found out that most consumers are not curious about all-electric vehicles due to their limited range, and besides that, their price are high and recharging them can be a trouble.
