Mercedez CLS Shooting Brake
Car Reviews /
IntroductionContrary to your first impression, the new Mercedez CLS Shooting Brake is far from huntsman's best friend. It's
unlikely to be adapted for 4WD right-hand-drive markets, this is because the driveshaft to the front wheels of the car
comes off the right-hand-side of the engine, which is a minus. Otherwise, among 4WD with V6 diesel cars there would be
an amazing, if not the best, addition.
OverviewThe model offers 3 engines in the UK, the 4-pot 250 CDI starting, a V6 350 CDI, and the 63 AMG. It is obvously less
practical and more pricy than E-class, so the question is, what customer the Shooting Brake has been designed for. As
for the US, it will probably lack demand too. Eurose-wise, it may interest a bunch of urban SUV drivers and owners of
saloons whose wishes are to ride a car less traditional. The same story happened back in 2005, when Mercedez CLS got
into markets with seemingly the same obscure purpose, and appearance. Apprently, the stressed was put on its unique
Is the interior of the car just as astounding?
Sit in the 3 backseats and immediately you'll find a good amont of headroom owing to the scalloped roof lining while
the ceiling directs rearward, and the cabin is nicely done overall.
You can easily fit your shoes with a cherry-wood deck, but this seems quite an unneeded element of luxury, same as the
rear arches, which create super little space as they encroach, thus making the room so small only a mini dog can leap
through. Raise you seats and you get as much volume as in Audi A6 Avant. However, with a button pressed the seats turn
to almost flat, which ensures you with 3 times the capacity, where the Mercedez Shooting Brake comes into its own.
What about the drive?
Let's first check out the entry-level 250 CDI. It appears a disappointment, as under acceleration the car growls,
groans, and the gears look like being pulled out of the box. Yet, it has 4 cylinders, 2.1 liters and lower tax
brackets. Is the car really worth it?
The Airmatic front suspension tends toward more pitch foreward and back under braking and acceleration in any mode you
take, leading to understeer. The whole trip comes out like struggling to smooth out unexpected bumps and mounts on
uneven road surfaces, so it creates the impression you are riding by far not a luxurious car. Whereas you expected
excellence you don't notice anything of it here.
Let's compare it with the CLS 350CDI.
The CLS 350CDI is a way different story, it is good, fast, and shows off sporting.
With standard springs and dampers in the front, your ride gets significntly better, the car turns in more sharply,
holds the initial line, and behaves in a less wavering manner. The 6-pot engine it is equipped with is powerful and
rhythmic, so you near feel the smooth gallop of horses under the hood.
Let's compare it with the CLS63 AMG.
It's been said it has been produced just out of joy and for no special reason. The V8 bi-turbo is on the verge of
explosion and desplays a strange intent once your grazethe gas pedal. It has much traction too, due to a nice ESP and
ride-control systems. Under heavy throttle and big mass ober the rear wheels you may expect it to act in oversteer but
it plunges ahead quickly. The AMG vehicles are now proving to be benchmark in high performance big cars.
Whatever model you choose,63 AMG or 350 CDI, the Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake proves itself as an anachronistic,
sophisticated, wonderful sporting estate.
