Car News / AutoWeek

Hi there. How was your lunch today? Had the turkey sandwich or maybe a salad? If the weather was nice, as it is here in Detroit, maybe you got outside for a bit.

Me? I had a heaping plate of horsepower and twin turbos. With little fanfare, a Nissan GT-R showed up at the office today--thoughtfully painted arrest-me red--and, amazingly, the key fob was left unguarded when most of the staff took their midday breaks.

I just wanted to take a quick spin, to see if the GT-R lives up to its billing. Wouldn"t be gone long, no one would miss it.

Somehow, slightly more than an hour had whizzed by before I pulled back into the AutoWeek garage. I did what my bosses expect of me--tested the GT-R at slow speeds, sorta high speeds and passing maneuvers. Instant fuel economy ranged from 30 mpg to less than 5 mpg, according to the cool monitor on the instrument panel. I turned some heads and got a thumbs up from a guy in an "80s-vintage BMW 3 Series.

And I just can"t fight off the urge to brag a little.

My gut reaction: The GT-R should be renamed OMG!

The radio in the GT-R is totally unnecessary--the growl and the turbo whine from the 480-hp, 3.8-liter V6 is the only background music you need.

The shifts from the dual-clutch, sequential six-speed transmission are crisp--just what you imagined every time you watched Michael Schumacher work from the in-car camera in a Formula One race.

The chassis is solid. Solid steering makes lane changes happen nearly as fast as the impulses travel from your brain to your hands. Even the rough-riding freeways that ring Detroit can"t diminish the confidence this automobile instills.

This gushing may shock some of my friends who know of my decades-long fondness for Corvettes--in part a throwback to the beginnings of my automobile lust.

I"m not removing the die-cast Corvettes from my desk. But I think there"s room for another nameplate in my office fleet.

2009 Civic Sedan review
The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
