No corner of the world is immune from the sport/utility vehicle and crossover trend--a fact driven home by a pair of U.S.-bound introductions planned for Auto China 2008 in Beijing, April 20-28.
One world premiere, the Mercedes-Benz GLK, won"t be a surprise to anyone. Mercedes has given a thorough preview to everyone with GLK concepts at this year"s Detroit and Geneva shows. Beijing is the setting for the production version"s arrival. The five-seat SUV will reach European dealerships this fall and U.S. dealerships next January.

One world premiere, the Mercedes-Benz GLK, won"t be a surprise to anyone. Mercedes has given a thorough preview to everyone with GLK concepts at this year"s Detroit and Geneva shows. Beijing is the setting for the production version"s arrival. The five-seat SUV will reach European and U.S. dealerships late this year.
The other big debut, the Audi Q5 crossover, hasn"t had any exposure, so its premiere will be closely watched. Audi is using the Beijing show to roll out its newest model in part because it sees China as a key market for growing sales. China is now Audi"s second-biggest market, after Germany.
The Q5, which uses the same chassis that underpins the Audi A5/A4, will be rolling into European showrooms this year and will reach U.S. dealers early next year as a 2010 model. Spy photos suggest that the Q5, which matches up against the BMW X3, will have a strong family resemblance to the Audi Q7.
Buick Invicta
China is also a big market for Buick--the General Motors brand sells more cars in China than it does in the United States. Last year, Buick grabbed attention in China with the sleek and curvy Riviera concept, which had input from GM"s design team in China. This year is Act II, with the Invicta concept, which GM says is the next step forward for the Riviera.
The majority of vehicles planned for the Beijing show are aimed at the domestic market, many of them from Chinese automakers.
Volkswagen is using the fourth-generation Golf as the base for a pair of new cars for China from its joint ventures: a family-sized sedan to be built by FAW-Volkswagen and the Lavida upscale sedan for Shanghai-Volkswagen.
Diesel, electric and hybrid powertrains will be plentiful at the Beijing show, primarily from Chinese makers.
This also could be the year we get some hint of Chinese automakers" progress as several aim for launching U.S. sales in the next decade:
--Chery Automobile plans diesel versions of its QQ6 small automobile and Eastar crossover.
--Great Wall Motor plans to unveil the electric Gwperi EV. It also will expand its lineup with the Gwfeelfine, Florid and Coolbear small cars.
--Brilliance China, BMW"s partner, will show the BS4 FRV small automobile it plans to launch this summer.
--Guangzhou Automobile plans a convertible concept for the Beijing show as it prepares to launch its own brand. The automaker partners with Honda and Toyota in China.

The HS 250h, Lexus announced this morning at the 2009 Detroit auto show, is the first luxury hybrid-only vehicle, as well as being Lexus' most fuel-efficient vehicle of all. Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage.
