New Shelby club says it has 2,000 members

Car News / AutoWeek

Team Shelby, the automobile club launched in the wake of Carroll Shelby"s legal dispute with the Shelby American Automobile Club, says its membership has reached 2,000 after about three months of activity.

Shelby ended his licensing agreement with the Shelby American Automobile Club Jan. 31, and threw his support behind Team Shelby, which launched in January.

The new club is now the only officially licensed group. It was originally called the S197 Shelby Owners Association. Team Shelby says its duties are to distribute newsletters, compile an online registry and plan events, including tours and track days.

The new club is an offshoot of Shelby Automobiles, and is organized under the company"s marketing department. Shelby marketing vice president Jim Owens says the club"s growth can be linked with the launch of new Shelby products, particularly from Ford and rising consumer interest.

"The root cause of this is the new cars, the excitement around it," Owens says.

A message left through an intermediary for Shelby American Automobile Club executive Rick Kopec on Wednesday, April 16, was not immediately returned.

Meanwhile, Carroll Shelby and the Shelby American Automobile Club have filed lawsuits against each other. At issue is control of records, financial documents and Shelby merchandise. The 5,000-member Shelby American Automobile Club maintains a registry on Shelby cars and checks on their authenticity. It was founded 33 years ago.

2009 Civic Sedan review
The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
