Indy 500: 39 entries for 92nd race

Car News / AutoWeek

The Indianapolis 500 field is rounding into shape with the annual rookie-orientation program just a few weeks away (May 4-5). There are 39 official entries, exactly the number Indy Racing League chief steward Brian Barnhart told Honda officials to expect.

One of the most interesting entries is Penske Racing"s No. 77 car, the same number used by 2006 Indy winner Sam Hornish Jr. in NASCAR. Penske officials didn"t list a driver and haven"t ruled out Hornish, but it appears that this automobile is his option if they choose to attempt the double-header with the Sprint Cup race at Lowe"s Motor Speedway on the same day.

Thirty-two cars have drivers assigned, including Alex Lloyd, who won last year"s Indy Lights title. Lloyd will be on loan from Ganassi Racing in the No. 16 automobile of Rahal Letterman Racing. Including Lloyd, there are

12 rookies; if they all make the race, it would be the most rookies for the event since 13 first-timers competed in 1997.

There are three former winners (Helio Castroneves, Buddy Rice and Dan Wheldon) and three women (Danica Patrick, Sarah Fisher and Milka Duno) among the entries.

IRL driver coach Al Unser Jr. said he has told several automobile owners that he wants to run the race again, but the two-time 500 winner said the chances of that happening "are less than 50 percent."

Also, ABC has named outspoken former driver Eddie Cheever to its broadcast booth for the Indianapolis 500 telecast, joining Marty Reid and Scott Goodyear.

Julianne Hough, who partnered with Helio Castroneves to win last fall"s "Dancing with the Stars" contest, will sing the national anthem before the race. And Jim Nabors, who traditionally sings "Back Home Again in Indiana," is expected to return after missing last year"s 500 because of health issues.

Official practice begins on May 6, with the race on May 25.

2009 Civic Sedan review
The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
