NASCAR and LPGA. Guys racing cars and women (a.k.a. ladies) playing golf. Both doing what they do supremely well. And they are neighbors, living five miles apart in Daytona Beach, Florida.

So, why don"t they get together?

The idea is not mine. My friend Bobby"s mother mentioned it when I was in Florida recently. Her daughter works for the LPGA, and the family is an ardent supporter. The notion struck me like a shanked shot off the noggin. Brilliant. NASCAR sponsoring an LPGA golf tournament played on the LPGA"s home courses in Daytona Beach! For some reason, there"s no sponsored tour event there now.

Well, I misunderstood. Actually, NASCAR had sponsored a Pro-Am with the LPGA for several years, though that has ended. But I so fell in love with the image of Cup stars, giving new meaning to their mottled driving suits, teeing up to send white balls down green fairways that I couldn"t let it go. The Pro-Am must be renewed. Expanded.

It"s a match made in promotion heaven--the virile NASCAR guys and the comely lady golfers. That and a major tournament. And then, on race day, the golfers drive the drivers around the oval on the introductory lap.

Contrary to awkward stereotyping, NASCAR drivers don"t spend all of their off time in bass boats and duck blinds. Dale Jarrett will probably be on the golf course as much as the race course this year, what with his impending retirement. Say Pro-Am to him. Bet he"d bite.

Golf balls are faster than race cars, at least for the first 30 yards. A promotion by BMW for its sponsorship of a PGA tournament in Chicago had a golf pro hit a ball as the green flag fell, and it outsprinted pros in a race automobile and on a motorcycle.

Hey, duplicate the trick at the speedway to promote a new NASCAR-LPGA collaboration. Maybe Louise Friberg of Sweden swatting the golf ball, Kyle Petty on a Liberty motorcycle and Jarrett in a farewell Toyota. Friberg told an interviewer that if she weren"t a professional golfer, she might like to be "a race-car driver."

With an LPGA connection, NASCAR might broaden its appeal to more women, more golfers. Sponsors would revel in the wider possibilities. And NASCAR would make points in its town-gown relationship, too. Daytona Beach! Send in the schedulers.

2009 Civic Sedan review
The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
