STUTTGART, GERMANY - Daimler"s accident researchers areworking on a sophisticated project for analyzing accidents atintersections. A new metal-forming process enables rapid, economicalproduction of variable bodyshell components. And specialists prevent faultsin the software of control units by means of code analysis and softwarere-engineering. Beginning tomorrow, you can read about these and otherfascinating topics such as Daimler’s Hybrid offensive for clean andefficient buses and trucks in the latest issue of Daimler"s HighTechReportHTR. Detailed material, such as films, animations, and expert interviews,is also available online at www.daimler.com/innovation.

Watch out!

A great many accidents occur at intersections and turn-offs, and around80 percent of these are in townships. Daimler"s experts are searching forthe reasons and devising solutions. After analyzing real accidents, theyselect some typical situations which they then reconstruct in precisedetail in the driving simulator. Under safe laboratory conditions, thereactions of various test persons in identical traffic scenarios can thusbe observed. Sensors record reaction times, brake pressures, and steeringangles, for example. Miniature cameras in the simulator vehicle monitor thefootwell and the driver"s posture and face; the results of questionnairesare also taken into account. The goal is an efficient intersection warningsystem for everyday use which can reliably identify critical situations, issue warnings in good time, and if necessary intervene to prevent anaccident.

Flexible profiles are on a roll

Deep-drawing or stamping has until now been the standard method ofproducing complex sheet metal profiles in automotive manufacture. Theengineers from Daimler have now developed an innovative, cost-savingprocess named "flexible roll forming," in which high-tensile steel sheetingis shaped into bodyshell profiles with variable lengths, cuts, andcross-sections. The advantages are a relatively high level of materialutilization and minimum tool wear. On a pilot unit, the experts arecurrently preparing this process for next year"s series production.

The bug busters

The source code for a control unit would fill thousands of pages ofsmall print. Who would want to proofread all that? Special code analysisprograms carry out this task in complex software packages. Afterinvestigating the various source codes and completing the code analysis, the experts begin to revise the software. As a result of constant furtherdevelopment, software grows substantially over the course of several years. To integrate new functions, the Daimler researchers frequently rely onsoftware re-engineering. In this process, entire programs are reorganizedand algorithms that have proven reliable are put into sustainable andreadily comprehensible form.

2009 Civic Sedan review
The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
