LONG-TERMERS: 2008 Acura MDXCar News /
A large hole left in our long-term fleet by the departure of the Chevrolet Suburban was plugged quite nicely, thank you, with the arrival of a dark-cherry Acura MDX late last fall ("Crossover Perfection," AW, Jan. 14). The MDX got here just in time to handle a variety of hauling duties ideally suited for a midsize sport/ute.
We took teenagers and their luggage to the airport, half a softball team and their gear to a tournament and some furniture to a college dorm room. The MDX was also the centerpiece for a college football tailgate party. The third row of seats and the 60/40 split second row allow for plenty of options when carrying people and/or stuff.
Right out of the box, the MDX received praise for its exterior styling. One editor, comparing the crossover with a first-generation MDX parked in his garage, said the new one "looks edgier and hunkered down, and I like it very much overall. I can"t help but think the designers used the Predator"s mask as inspiration for the front-end, though."
The first few pages of the logbook contain notes marveling at how quiet and comfortable the MDX is, with special mention of the supportive seats with side bolstering. On an early 400-mile jaunt, one editor discovered a minor annoyance.
"You can"t get a trip-odometer reading and temperature at the same time," he wrote. "It"s a minor thing, to be sure, but paging through menus via a steering-wheel-mounted button is a pain, not to mention a major driver distraction."
That wasn"t the only noted interior annoyance. The center stack in the MDX has myriad buttons for the climate, navigation and entertainment systems. After a while, you get to know where all the buttons are, and most staffers prefer buttons to an iDrive-like alternative, but it can be confusing at first.
Drivers made positive comments about the excellent navigation system with real-time traffic updates from XM, the smooth V6 powertrain and the power liftgate. And with the first taste of winter, the MDX"s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive received high praise. When snow was forecast, the Acura was high on the sign-out list.
In the first three months, the MDX missed just one day of service, and that was to install a trailer hitch. As we make our way through winter, some folks are dreaming about using the MDX to tow a boat someplace warm.
