Mosley won’t resign, apologizes for scandal

Car News / AutoWeek

FIA president Max Mosley apologized Tuesday for embarrassing racing after a British tabloid published photos of what appeared to be him participating in an orgy.

He sent a letter to FIA clubs and governing bodies saying he doesn’t plan to resign his position and is pursing an invasion of privacy against the paper, according to the Associated Press.

Mosley, 67, also denied in the letter that there were Nazi connections to the sex scandal. He is the son of Nazi sympathizer Sir Oswald Mosley, who founded the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s.

Last weekend, the News of the World published shots that reportedly show the Mosley with five role-playing prostitutes in a London apartment--sparking outrage from racing circles around the globe. Mosley and the prostitutes appeared to role-play as concentration camp guards and prisoners.

"From information provided to me by an impeccable high-level source close to the U.K. police and security services, I understand that over the last two weeks or so, a covert investigation of my private life and background has been undertaken by a group specializing in such things, for reasons and clients as yet unknown," Mosley said in the letter. "I have had similar but less well-sourced information from France.

"Regrettably you are now familiar with the results of this covert investigation and I am very sorry if this has embarrassed you or the club. Not content with publicizing highly personal and private activities, which are, to say the least, embarrassing, a British tabloid newspaper published the story with the claim that there was some sort of Nazi connotation to the matter. This is entirely false."

Meanwhile, Mosley"s plans to attend this weekend"s Bahrain Grand Prix are unknown. F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone told the Times of London that Mosley should avoid the race so as not to create a distraction.

“He shouldn’t go, should he?” Ecclestone said. “The problem is he would take all the ink away from the race and put it on something which, honestly and truly, is nobody else’s business anyway."

2009 Civic Sedan review
The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
