Audi gives ALMS a last-second yes

Car News / AutoWeek

For Audi to wait until the last moment to confirm its participation in the full American Le Mans Series is nothing new, but this time it made its decision late--very late.

On Friday, March 14, the eve of the season-opening 12 Hours of Sebring, Audi finally confirmed it will continue in the LMP1 class for the full year.

Why the delay? Audi was playing hardball, lobbying hard to get IMSA--the ALMS sanctioning body--to add more of the performance restrictions placed on LMP2 cars by the Automobile Club de l"Ouest, the European organizer of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Audi wants changes that it argues will allow its R10 TDIs to race head to head with the LMP2 Penske Porsches and Acuras on the types of circuits that make up the bulk of the ALMS schedule. It remains to be seen if Audi will get its wish.

Audi Sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich said that changes inevitably will follow if his LMP1 cars are consistently beaten by the top LMP2 cars.

"It should be obvious if something needs to be done," Ullrich said. "If that is the case, I am quite sure that IMSA will react."

Ullrich may have to wait for some time before any rule tweaks take effect. Messages from IMSA seem to suggest that the higher weight limit and reduced fuel capacity implemented this year in Europe for LMP2s are unlikely to be in place until the start of 2009, when ALMS has promised it will adhere 100 percent to the Le Mans rulebook.

The only concession to Audi this year is likely to be an increase in fuel capacity to give the R10s the same strategic flexibility as the LMP2s.

That change will be vital if Audi is to stand a chance of mixing it up with the LMP2s at tracks such as St. Petersburg, Miller Motorsports Park and Lime Rock Park. Unless the change happens, Marco Werner/Lucas Luhr and Emanuele Pirro/Frank Biela could have their work cut out for them to match last year"s tally of just four overall wins, especially since Audi failed to triumph at Sebring last weekend for the first time since 1999.

2009 Civic Sedan review
The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
