WOLFSBURG, GERMANY - The readers of Germany"s largestconsumer magazine "Guter Rat" (Good Advice) have decided: the Golf estateis "Most Sensible Car 2008" in the category "estate/van". The Volkswagenconvinced the automobile enthusiasts with environmentally friendly CO2 values,great driving comfort and a clever, spacious interior.

The third-generation Golf estate can transport five people with 690litres of luggage while offering genuinely fun driving with especially goodeconomy. The two diesels available for the new estate (77 kW/105 PS and 103kW/140 PS) are among the most efficient engines of all. The "small" TDImanages 100 kilometres with just 5.2 litres of fuel. But the "big" dieselis also thrifty and environmentally friendly: the Golf estate 2.0 with atop speed of 205 km/h uses just 5.6 litres per 100 km with a CO2 emissionsvalue of 148 g/km.

Jochen Sengpiehl, Head of Marketing for Volkswagen, accepted the "MostSensible Car" award at the "Meilenwerk" in Berlin on Friday evening. Lastyear, Volkswagen had already emerged as a winner of the "Guter Rat"readers" choice in the federal capital. Europe"s largest automobile builder won aspecial award for "Most Sensible Innovation" for its high-temperature fuelcell.

Incidentally, Volkswagen is offering the Golf estate with permanentfour-wheel drive starting immediately. In extreme cases, nearly 100 percentof tractive force can be transferred to the rear wheels for the bestpossible grip.

The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
