Convertible Corvette C6RS to bow at Sebrin

Car News / AutoWeek

Pratt & Miller Engineering is unveiling a convertible version of its 600-hp Corvette C6RS supercar this weekend at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

The yellow automobile that will be displayed is owned by company co-founder Jim Miller.

The C6RS is the brainchild of Pratt & Miller, which runs the Corvette factory racing team in the American Le Mans Series. The C6RS has an all-aluminum 8.2-liter V8 rated at 600 lb-ft of torque and can run from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

The C6RS has racing-inspired carbon-fiber body panels, a computer-adjustable suspension system and Brembo monoblock disc brakes.

Pratt & Miller developed the convertible version of the C6RS after devising a suspension package for the Corvette convertible"s hydroformed steel chassis. The prototype C6RS used the Corvette Z06"s aluminum chassis--a automobile owned by "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno.

Pratt & Miller is taking orders for the coupe and convertible versions of the C6RS. Deliveries are expected to begin early in April. It costs $185,000 for a Corvette to be converted to a C6RS, a Pratt & Miller spokesman said, not including the cost of buying the automobile itself.

It is expected to cost less to convert a Corvette Z06 than a standard coupe or convertible because the Z06 is already equipped with the LS7 V8. Converting base coupes and convertibles to a C6RS requires a new engine.

Pratt & Miller does most of the conversion work at its plant in New Hudson, Michigan, but outsources a small amount of the leather work to another local firm.

The company says it has six orders for C6RS conversions in hand, with four more orders expected soon.

It takes about six weeks to convert a Corvette to a C6RS. Pratt & Miller has the capacity to build 25 C6RS cars per year.

2009 Civic Sedan review
The Civic’s base price of $15,505 compares favorably with its direct competitor, the Toyota Corolla ($15,350), the outgoing Mazda 3 i Sport ($15,360), and Hyundai Elantra GLS ($14,120). Fuel economy, ever important for buyers in this segment, is a frugal 26 city, 34 highway mpg. Notably, both the Ford Focus (24/35) and Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (25/37) achieve better highway mileage. The Cobalt is tops in its class for horsepower, too, with 155. The Civic’s 1.8L engine makes 140 hp.
